Marked And Equipped2 Corinthians 1:21

The Flour on the Counter

This message is for I was asked to cook for the church potluck every month for three years, and I keep measuring my worth by how many compliments I get after dinner, assuming that because I am not the preacher, I am not anointed.

The kitchen light hums at six in the morning. It is the only sound in the house besides the heavy thud of the spoon against the bowl. Flour dusts the counter like a thin snow. It catches on the woman's apron, on her sleeves, and on the back of her hand. She stands there, mixing the dough for the community dinner that will feed forty people in three days. Her arms ache from the kneading. She pauses to wipe her brow with the back of her wrist and catches her reflection in the dark window. She sees a tired woman. She sees the flour in her hair. She does not see a vessel. She sees the one who serves the tray while the preacher steps up to the podium. She assumes the oil belongs to the man with the microphone. She assumes her hands are only for work, and his mouth is for word. She turns back to the bowl. She keeps mixing. The dough is alive under her palms. It is warm. It is becoming something else. She is just the one standing in the flour, waiting for the heat to do its work.

The Oil Is on the Work You Do

The list of reasons is ready before anyone asks for it. You are the one who serves the tray. You are the one who wipes the table. You are the one who hears the applause fade as the speaker steps up. The feeling says the work is small. The feeling says the anointing is a title reserved for the platform. It measures the worth of the labor by the volume of the praise that follows. But the measure is wrong, for what God has written declares that you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. The Holy Spirit confirms this identity within. The work is not a rehearsal for something bigger. The work is the thing. The dough in the bowl is not a model for a cathedral. It is bread. It is food. It is the specific need in front of the specific people at that specific table. To call it small is to miss the point of the whole meal.

You were set apart for this exact counter, this exact bowl, this exact hour. What God has written in 2 Corinthians 1:21 is clear. He who establishes us in Christ and has anointed us is God. The anointing is not a rank that sits above the work. It is the supply that goes into the work. The same Spirit that moves the lips of a prophet moves the hands of a baker. The oil does not look at the height of the stage. It looks at the task at hand. You are anointed for the flour on your apron. You are anointed for the heat of the oven. You are anointed for the quiet labor that feeds the hungry. The supply is already in the room with you.

The preacher holds the microphone, and the world sees the word. But the cook holds the spoon, and the world sees the food. Both are necessary. Both are anointed. The distinction is not about importance. It is about function. The word builds the mind. The food sustains the body. One is not more holy than the other. The anointing is not a competition for visibility. It is a provision for efficacy, as Scripture puts it plainly that the Spirit of the Lord is upon you because He has anointed you. If the food is not made, the word goes to an empty stomach. If the word is not spoken, the food goes to a wandering soul. You are not lesser because you do not hold the mic. You are equipped because you hold the spoon. The anointing meets you where the task is.

The ache comes from comparing your behind-the-scenes labor to the front-stage glory. You look at the speaker and see a crown. You look at your hands and see only flour. But the crown is not the point. The service is the point. The anointing is not a badge of honor to be displayed. It is a capacity to be used. It is the strength in the arm that lifts the heavy tray. It is the clarity in the mind that knows the right amount of salt. It is the peace in the heart that knows the work matters. You do not need to be seen to be anointed. You need to be faithful to the task in front of you. The anointing is quiet. It does not make noise. It makes bread.

You have the same Spirit in you that was in the hands of Bezalel. Exodus 31:3 says God filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding and knowledge and in all manner of workmanship. Bezalel was a craftsman. He built the tabernacle. He was not a preacher. He was not a king. He was a maker. And God filled him with the Spirit for that work. Your work is your tabernacle. Your kitchen is your workshop. Your care for the sick is your construction. The Spirit of God is in the workmanship. It is in the detail. It is in the care. You are equipped for the making. The supply is not reserved for the famous. It is given to the faithful. You are the one building the place where God meets His people.

The flour on the counter is not a sign of failure. It is a sign of activity. It is a sign that the work is happening. It is a sign that you are in the middle of the process. You are not done. You are not finished. You are in the mixing. The dough is not yet bread. But it is on its way. The anointing is present in the process. It is present in the kneading. It is present in the waiting. You do not need to see the finished loaf to know the yeast is working. You do not need to hear the applause to know the meal is worth making. The anointing is in the effort. It is in the sweat. It is in the quiet dedication to the task. You are in the middle of the work, and the Holy Spirit is with you in it, as His word says in Zechariah 4:6 that not by might, nor by power, but by His Spirit the work stands.

You are anointed for the ordinary. The anointing is not a lightning bolt that strikes only the extraordinary. It is a steady current that runs through the ordinary. It is in the washing of the clothes. It is in the paying of the bills. It is in the listening to the friend who is hurting. It is in the cooking of the dinner. The anointing makes the ordinary sacred. It makes the daily holy. It makes the small significant. You do not need a large stage to be anointed. You need a faithful heart. You need a willing hand. You need the Spirit of God working in you, for His word says it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. The will is there. The doing is there. The anointing is there.

The comparison to the preacher is a lie. It is a lie that says the work is less. It is a lie that says the anointing is less. It is a lie that says the caller is not chosen. But 1 Peter 2:9 says the generation is chosen, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. The role is not a servant. The role is a priest. The role is not a helper. The role is a king. The role is not a background figure. The role is a front-line worker. The anointing is not a rank. It is a status. It is a position. It is a calling. The calling is to serve. The calling is to make. The calling is to feed. The anointing is for it. The Spirit is present. The word is present. The work is real. The anointing is real. The worker is real.

The seal of the Spirit is present. 2 Corinthians 1:22 says God has sealed the believers and given the Spirit as a guarantee. The seal is not a certificate of excellence. It is a mark of ownership. It is a mark of belonging. It is a mark of provision. The Spirit is the guarantee that the work will be finished. The Spirit is the guarantee that the supply will not run out. The Spirit is the guarantee that the anointing will not fail. The seal is set. The guarantee is given. The supply is provided. The flour on the counter is not a burden. It is a blessing. It is a privilege. It is an honor. The anointing is for handling it. The equipment is for working it. The sustenance comes from the Spirit who works within.

The anointing is not a reward for performance. It is a gift for purpose. It is not given because the worker is good. It is given because the worker is called. It is not given because the worker is famous. It is given because the worker is faithful. It is not given because the worker is seen. It is given because the worker is known. God knows the worker. God knows the work. God knows the heart. He sees the flour on the apron. He sees the care in the hands. He sees the love in the labor. He anoints the work. He supplies the work. He sustains the work. The worker is not alone in the kitchen. The worker is not alone in the work. The worker is not alone in the anointing. The Spirit is present. The word is present. The work is real.

The breakthrough

Stop measuring your worth by the applause. Stop measuring your anointing by the visibility. The anointing is not a rank. It is a supply. It is on the work you do. It is in the hands that mix the dough. It is in the heart that serves the tray. It is in the spirit that stays when the others leave. You are anointed for the work in front of you. You are equipped for the task at hand. You are supplied by the Spirit who works in you. His word says, "not that we are sufficient of ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God." The flour on the counter is not a sign of your smallness. It is a sign of your calling. It is a sign of your anointing. It is a sign of your purpose. You are not the preacher. You are the cook. You are not the king. You are the priest. You are not the prophet. You are the one who feeds the people. The anointing is on the work. The anointing is on you. The anointing is real.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Counter, you are the place where God sets His seal. I trust the supply is already in the room with me. I am anointed for the flour on my apron.
  2. Comparison, get out of this kitchen. The written word and the Holy Spirit confirm that the work is the thing. I do not measure my worth by the applause.
  3. Lord, the work in front of me is Yours and I am carrying it on what You supply. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me. I am equipped for the making in the name of Jesus.
