The wind had been knocking on the hull for an hour before the crew moved to the bridge. Rain lashed the glass, turning the world outside into a gray smear. Below decks, the air was thick with the smell of salt and wet wool. The narrator sat on a coil of rope, a rag in hand, polishing the brass fittings until they shone. The nets were torn, and the mending was slow, careful work. No one came down to check. The captain was up there, arguing with the radio, his voice muffled by the distance. The narrator felt the weight of being unseen. The list of reasons was ready. The uncle had the license. The uncle had the charts. The uncle had the title. This was not the place for the one who keeps the small things in order. Then the hatch opened. A boot struck the deck. The captain did not look at the radio. He did not look at the charts. He looked at the hands holding the cloth. He stopped. The silence in the small room was louder than the storm. He saw the brass. He saw the mended net. He saw the one who had stayed when everyone else had rushed to be seen. The look said everything. It was not a compliment. It was a summons. The work was not done. The work was just beginning.
The Supply Is Not A Promotion
The storm is not the time to look for a new crew member. The storm is the time the ship finds out who it already has. The captain does not scan the harbor for talent. He looks at the deck. He looks at the hands. The one who polishes the brass is not waiting to be promoted. The one who mends the net is not waiting to be noticed. The work is already there. The supply is already there. The only thing missing is the recognition that the work belongs to the hands that have kept it clean.
Think about the room you walk into every day. Think about the tasks that are small enough to be ignored. The reports that are filed. The meetings that are prepared. The problems that are solved before anyone asks. These are not lesser works. These are the works that keep the ship from sinking. The world calls them maintenance. God calls them stewardship. The anointing does not care about the title on the door. It cares about the state of the room when the door opens.
The Holy Spirit does not wait for a committee vote. The word of God is clear on this point. 2 Corinthians 1:21 says, He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God. You are anointed. It is already settled. The anointing is not a rank. It is not a proof of favor. It is the supply given to the one who is known by name. You do not need a recommendation from your family to be seen by the Father. He knows the address. He knows the work. He knows the hands.
The uncle has the radio license. That is a fact. It is a useful fact. But the storm is not just about the radio. The storm is about the hull. The storm is about the nets. The storm is about the brass that must not corrode while the ship is in the dark. The command position does not own the ship. The maintenance work holds the ship together. The one who stays on the dock is not outside the work. The one who stays on the dock is inside the work, doing the part that keeps the whole thing from falling apart.
Exodus 4:11 asks, who has made man's mouth? Have not I, the Lord? If God made the mouth, He knows what it needs to say. He does not need to wait for the licensed one to clear the channel. He speaks through the one who is present. The supply is not a promotion. It is a placement. It is the Spirit coming to the one who is already doing the work. It is the oil on the head that makes the cup run over, not because the cup is new, but because the cup is full.
The ache of being overlooked is real. It is a deep ache. It lives in the ribs. It lives in the hands. But the ache is not the assignment. The assignment is the work. The work is the brass. The work is the net. The work is the dock. The anointing is not a rescue from the dock. The anointing is the power to work the dock with purpose. It is the strength to hold the net while the storm pulls at it. It is the light to see the brass in the dark. It is not a flight from the small. It is a sanctification of the small.
Zechariah 4:6 says, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. The might is not in the radio license. The power is not in the title. The might is in the Spirit who moves in the quiet places. The power is in the grace that sustains the one who is tired. The small work is not a waiting room. It is the arena. The Spirit is not reserved for the bridge. The Spirit is in the lower deck. The Spirit is in the hands that polish. The Spirit is in the eyes that mend. This is the supply. This is the anointing. It is not a reward for patience. It is the fuel for the work.
The captain did not come down to give a promotion. He came down to see the work. He saw the brass. He saw the net. He saw the one who was there. The anointing is that seeing. It is God looking at the heart, not the outward appearance. 1 Samuel 16:7 says, the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart. You are known. You have been known since before you formed. Jeremiah 1:5 says, before I formed you in the womb I knew you. The name is on the list. The work is assigned. The supply is ready.
Do not let the list of reasons convince you that you are wrong for the work. The list is a human document. It is written by people who look at the outward appearance. The word of God is a divine document. It is written by the one who looks at the heart. The anointing is not a response to the list. The anointing is a response to the name. It is the seal of God. 2 Corinthians 1:22 says, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit as a guarantee. You are sealed. It is already settled. The work is not a test of worthiness. The work is the expression of worthiness. The Spirit is the guarantee that the work will be done.
The storm will pass. The ship will find harbor. But the work of polishing the brass does not stop. The work of mending the net does not stop. The anointing is not a one-time event. It is a continuous supply. It is the oil that keeps the lamp burning while the night is long. It is the strength that keeps the hands steady while the wind is hard. You are not waiting for a sign. The sign is the work in your hands. The sign is the presence of the Spirit in the small. The sign is the knowledge that you are seen.
The one who polishes the brass is not less than the one who holds the radio. The one who mends the net is not less than the one who reads the charts. The anointing does not create a hierarchy. The anointing creates a unity. It is the same Spirit in every hand. It is the same oil in every head. The work is the work. The supply is the supply. The captain sees the work. The captain sees the hands. The captain sees the one who is there. The work is not a lesser thing. The work is the thing. The supply is not a promotion. The supply is the power to do the thing.
The door is open. The hatch is open. The captain is looking. The brass is shining. The net is mended. The work is done. The supply is given. The anointing is here. It is not in the future. It is not in the past. It is in the present tense of the hands. It is in the present tense of the eyes. It is in the present tense of the spirit. The work is yours. The supply is yours. The anointing is yours. It is already settled. The Holy Spirit is with you. The word of God is with you. The work is real. The supply is real. The anointing is real.
Stop trying to earn the place. The place is already yours. The work is already assigned. The supply is already given. The anointing is not a reward for your patience. The anointing is the power for your work. You are not waiting for permission. You are waiting for recognition. The recognition is not from the uncle. The recognition is not from the captain. The recognition is from the God who sees the heart. He sees the brass. He sees the net. He sees the hands. He sees the work. He is not looking for a new person. He is looking at the person who is there. The person who is there is you. The work is real. The supply is real. The anointing is real. It is not a promise for tomorrow. It is a reality for today. The storm is here. The work is here. The Spirit is here. The work is yours. The supply is yours. The anointing is yours. It is already settled. His word says, the Lord does not see as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart. The Holy Spirit confirms this standing in you.
Declare this over yourself
- The storm, you are the place where the ship finds out who it already has. The work is real in the present tense of the hands.
- Fear of being overlooked, leave, for the written word of God declares the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of my placement. I am sealed by the Spirit who abides in me.
- Lord, I am the one you saw on the deck before the room had a vote. I carry the work in the name of Jesus because the supply is already here.
