Anointed For ThisColossians 3:23

The Soil Is the Assignment

This message is for I was asked to care for the garden after my mother died, and I keep waiting for a bigger spiritual role to open so I can stop feeling like a gardener is all I am.

The trowel was heavier than it looked. She stood in the backyard, the morning light catching the dust on her shoulders, and stared at the patch of dirt her mother had tended for forty years. The soil was dark and still, waiting for a hand that did not feel like hers. She had spent the last three months expecting a sign, a door to open, a role that would match the size of the loss inside her chest. She had written down three possible ministries, each one grander than the last. None of them involved weeds. None of them involved the specific, stubborn root system of a rosebush that refused to die. She felt small in the yard. She felt like a gardener, and a gardener was not what she thought God had for her. She wondered if the silence was a delay. She wondered if her hands were too plain for the next chapter. The wind moved through the fence, rustling the dry leaves. She looked at the dirt again. It did not ask if she was ready. It just sat there, needing the work. She lowered the trowel into the earth. The sound it made was small, but it was the first honest sound in weeks. The waiting room was a myth. The yard was the room. She did not look up for a new assignment. She looked down at the root, and she started to dig.

The Ordinary Task Is the Anointed Work

The list of reasons is ready before anyone asks for it. The task is too small, too domestic, too quiet to be the thing. The mind creates a hierarchy where the ordinary sits at the bottom, and the spiritual sits at the top. This separation is the ache. It is the belief that the hand doing the work is not the hand God has in mind. The soil does not know about the hierarchy. It only knows that it is being turned. The gap between what the hand does and what the mind wants is where the waiting lives. It is a comfortable place, because it keeps the reader safe from the risk of being ordinary. But safety is not the same as assignment.

God does not see as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart. This is the first anchor. The value of the work is not in its visibility. It is in the heart that meets the task. When the heart is honest, the trowel is not a symbol of failure. It is a tool of faithfulness. The outward appearance of the garden is not the measure of the anointing. The anointing is not a rank that requires a larger stage. It is a supply that meets the specific need in front of the hands. The dirt is not a placeholder. It is the place where the supply lands.

You were set apart for this soil. His word says, before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and I ordained you. The ordination is not for a future event. It is for the present moment. The Holy Spirit does not wait for a grander purpose to arrive before He supplies the strength for the current one. He is already in the dirt with the hands that are digging. The work is not preparation for the assignment. The work is the assignment. The distinction is the lie that keeps the reader waiting. The anointing is not a reward for finishing the small things. It is the presence that makes the small things possible.

The task feels like a cage because the mind has decided the cage is smaller than the bird. The bird is not bigger than the cage. The bird is the space inside the cage. The hands do not need to escape the yard to find their purpose. They need to trust that the yard is the whole world right now. This is not a reduction of the reader's value. It is a revelation of the reader's scope. The scope is not limited by the size of the task. It is defined by the faithfulness in the doing. The anointing is not a ticket out of the ordinary. It is the oil on the wheel that keeps the ordinary moving.

Exodus 4:12 says, now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. The supply is not separate from the sending. The teaching is not separate from the going. When the reader steps into the yard, the supply steps in with them. The words to say are not found in a book of grand visions. They are found in the rhythm of the work. The Holy Spirit does not speak over the waiting room. He speaks over the digging. The connection between the command and the capability is immediate. There is no gap between the call and the capacity. The capacity is built into the call.

You have the same Spirit that moved over the waters of creation. 2 Corinthians 3:5 says, not that we are sufficient of ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. The sufficiency is not in the skill of the gardener. It is in the God who is present in the garden. The hands are not the source of the fruit. The hands are the channel. The channel does not need to be impressive. It needs to be open. The anointing is not a proof of favor. It is a fact of presence. The presence is not contingent on the outcome of the harvest. It is contingent on the faithfulness of the sowing. The sowing is enough. The presence is enough.

The grief is not an obstacle to the work. The grief is part of the work. The soil holds the memory of the mother's hands. The reader's hands are continuing the story, not replacing it. This is not a burden. It is a trust. The anointing is not a shield against pain. It is a strength that works through pain. 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. The weakness is the empty hand. The strength is the full hand of God. The hand does not need to be full on its own. It only needs to be open to the one who fills it. The filling is not a future event. It is a present reality.

You are anointed for this specific patch of dirt. 1 John 2:20 says, you have an anointing from the Holy One. The anointing is not a general gift that can be applied to any task. It is a specific supply for the specific task. The dirt is not a test of worthiness. It is a place of meeting. The meeting is not with a higher power in a distant heaven. It is with the God who is in the dirt with the reader. The anointing is not a rank. It is a relationship. The relationship is not dependent on the size of the garden. It is dependent on the closeness of the hands to the soil. The closeness is the anointing.

The waiting is a form of resistance. It is a way of saying that the present is not enough. But the present is the only place where the supply meets the effort. The future is not a place of work. The future is a place of rest. The work is here. The rest is later. The reader does not need to earn the rest by finishing the work. The rest is a gift. The work is a gift. Both are gifts. The anointing is not a wage for the work. It is a companion for the work. The companion does not leave when the work gets hard. The companion stays in the dirt. The companion is the Holy Spirit.

Zechariah 4:6 says, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. The might is the desire to be bigger. The power is the effort to be seen. The Spirit is the quiet presence that makes the work holy. The reader does not need to be mightier than the soil. The reader does not need to be more powerful than the weeds. The reader needs to be led by the Spirit. The Spirit does not lead to a bigger garden. The Spirit leads to a deeper root. The depth is the measure. The depth is the anointing.

You were known before the soil was turned. Jeremiah 1:5 says, before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and I ordained you. The ordination is not a future title. It is a present identity. The identity is not dependent on the outcome of the garden. It is dependent on the knowledge of the Knower. The Knower does not see the smallness of the task. He sees the greatness of the hands. The hands are not small. The hands are anointed. The anointing is not a thing the reader has. It is a thing the reader is. The being is the work. The work is the being.

The soil is the assignment. It is not a waiting room. It is the room. The door is not locked. The door is open. The reader is already inside. The work is already done in the heart of God. The hands are only catching up. The catching up is not a failure. It is a process. The process is not painful. It is purposeful. The purpose is not to be seen. The purpose is to be faithful. The faithfulness is the anointing. The anointing is the faithfulness. The loop is closed. The dirt is moved. The work is holy.

The breakthrough

The trowel is in your hand. The dirt is under your fingernails. The waiting is over. The assignment is here. It is not a lesser version of your life. It is the version of your life that is real. The anointing is not a future event. It is a present reality. The Holy Spirit is not in a distant heaven. The Holy Spirit is in the dirt with you, for what God has written is plain: you have an anointing from the Holy One. The work is not preparation. The work is the thing. The thing is holy. The thing is enough. The thing is the assignment. You do not need to be bigger. You do not need to be seen. You need to be faithful. The faithfulness is the anointing. The anointing is the faithfulness. The loop is closed. The dirt is moved. The work is holy. You are not a gardener waiting for a priest. You are the priest in the garden. The garden is the altar. The trowel is the offering. The offering is accepted. The acceptance is the anointing. The anointing is the acceptance. The acceptance is here. The here is enough. The enough is the anointing. The anointing is the enough.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Garden, you are the room and not the waiting. Hear me, I am sent into you, and the supply is already on the work.
  2. Fear, leave the yard now. You are broken by the written word and the Holy Spirit who speaks over the digging.
  3. Lord, I am anointed for this specific patch of dirt, in the name of Jesus. I am the priest in the garden, and the faithfulness is the anointing.
