The fluorescent lights hummed low in the sanctuary, a sound that seemed to vibrate in the floorboards. She stood in the back pew, her knuckles white around a single sheet of paper. The ink looked like black holes. Inside, the room was dark, save for the glow of the screen where his name waited in bold type. Two hundred faces sat in the rows ahead, still and expectant. Her throat had been tight since Tuesday, a physical knot that had nothing to do with grief. It was the terror of the sound. She knew exactly how her consonants would blur. She knew the 'r' would roll into an 'l', the 't' would soften into a 'd'. She replayed the funeral in her head for the third time. In the simulation, the silence after the first stumble was deafening. She saw the pity in their eyes before it even happened. The pastor had nodded at her, a gentle, firm gesture that meant the choice was already made. But her hands shook. She was the wrong person for this. She was the girl who swallowed words. The paper felt heavy, not with weight, but with the pressure of every time she had wished for a different voice. She looked at the front row, where his wife sat, waiting for the name to be spoken. The clock on the wall ticked, a metronome for a performance she was not qualified to give.
The Mouth Is Not Yours To Judge
The list of disqualifications is ready before anyone asks for it. It is long and specific. It names the blur, the stutter, the hesitation. It argues that the assignment requires a polished instrument, and this one is cracked. But the crack is not a flaw in the plan. It is the texture of the vessel. The assignment is not a test of diction. It is a test of trust. The mouth that stumbles is the same mouth that breathes. And the breath is from the One who made it.
Exodus 4:11 asks a direct question: who has made man's mouth? The answer is not the surgeon. It is not the speech therapist. It is not the years of practice. It is the Lord. He did not just assign the work. He built the tool. He shaped the tongue. He wired the nerve. If He assigned the message, He did not leave the delivery to chance. He is the architect of the very lips that are trembling right now.
You are not disqualified by the stumble. You have been equipped by the Maker. This is not a platitude. It is a fact of creation. God has promised that He will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say. The Holy Spirit is not waiting for perfection. He is already present in the tension of the throat. The supply is not a smooth voice. The supply is the presence of the One who formed the face.
The fear of judgment is loud, but it is not the final word. The room is waiting for a voice, yes. But they are not waiting for a performance. They are waiting for the truth to be spoken. The truth does not need to be beautiful to be true. It needs to be clear. And clarity comes from the Spirit, not from the muscles of the tongue. The blur will remain. But the message will not be lost.
Think about the hands that wrote the eulogy. They were steady. But the hands that will hold the paper are shaking. That is okay. The shaking is not a sign of failure. It is a sign of life. It is the friction of the human meeting the divine. Do not try to smooth it out. Let it be rough. Let it be real. The anointing is not a coat of varnish over the wood. It is the oil that allows the wood to burn without being consumed.
You were ordained before you were formed. Jeremiah 1:5 says the Lord knew you in the womb. He did not wait for you to master your speech to claim you. He claimed you in the silence of the womb. He ordained you to a purpose that does not depend on your eloquence. The assignment is not a promotion. It is a confirmation. The one who sent you is the one who will finish the work.
Do not say you are a child. Do not say you are too small. Do not say the voice is too weak. Jeremiah 1:7 commands: do not say I am a child, for you shall go to all that I send you to. The size of the voice does not determine the reach of the word. The reach is determined by the Sender. The Holy Spirit moves the air in the lungs. He moves the breath out. He is the engine. The body is only the vehicle.
You have an anointing from the Holy One. This is not a title. It is a fact. 1 John 2:20 states it plainly. The anointing abides in you. It does not leave when the voice stumbles. It does not fade when the room goes quiet. It remains. It is the guarantee that the message will land. The spirit of the Lord God is upon you, because the Lord has anointed you. The power is not in the pronunciation. The power is in the presence.
The cup runs over. Psalm 23:5 speaks of oil on the head. The oil is not for the show. It is for the assignment. It is the supply for the work. The cup is not full because the speaker is impressive. The cup is full because the Provider is faithful. The overflow is not a reward for excellence. It is a provision for the task. Let the cup run over. Let the words spill. Let the truth be messy and loud and alive.
It is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 removes the burden of self-sufficiency. You are not required to be sufficient of yourself. Your sufficiency is from God. The will to speak is His. The doing is His. The stumbling is part of the process, not a barrier to it. The Holy Spirit is working in the muscles. He is working in the mind. He is working in the silence between the words.
Faithful is He who calls you, who also will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 is the anchor. The call is not a suggestion. It is a command. And the command includes the completion. He who began the work will complete it. The eulogy will be read. The name will be spoken. The room will hear it. Not because the voice is perfect. But because the God who made the mouth is faithful to the word He has placed on it.
The assignment is not a lesser one because the voice is imperfect. It is not training for something more important later. It is the work. It is now. It is here. The anointing is not a rank. It is not a proof of favor. It is the oil for the priest, the king, and the prophet. It is for the one who is sent. The one who is sent is equipped. The equipment is not a removal of the limit. The equipment is the presence of the Lord in the limit.
The paper is in your hand. The room is waiting. The fear is loud, but it is not the owner. The owner is the One who made the mouth. The stumble is not a failure. It is a texture. The blur is not a lie. It is a truth with a human face. Do not wait for the voice to become smooth. Do not wait for the terror to leave. The terror is part of the journey. The journey is not to a place where the voice is perfect. The journey is to a place where the voice is surrendered. The Holy Spirit is already in the throat. He is not waiting for permission. He is ready to speak. The anointing is not a badge of honor. It is a tool for work. The work is this moment. The moment is now. The name on the paper is real. The people in the room are real. The voice is yours. But the breath is His. Take the breath. Speak the name. Let it blur. Let it stumble. Let it be you. The Lord is with your mouth. He will teach you what to say. The word is already settled. The door is open. Walk through it.
Declare this over yourself
- The morning of the eulogy, the room is waiting for the truth to be spoken and it is not asking for a polished performance. You, the paper is in your hand and the fear is loud but it is not the owner of this moment. Get the breath from the One who formed the face and let the words spill out as they are.
- The fear of judgment, the stutter and the hesitation, are evicted from the throat and the mind right now. The written word in your hand is clear and the Holy Spirit is the engine moving the air in the lungs. Be the vessel that lets the blur remain while the message lands with power.
- Lord, the work in front of me is Yours and I am carrying it on what You supply. The anointing abides in me and the power is in the presence, not in the pronunciation. Walk through the open door and speak the name in the name of Jesus.
