The Soil That Has Not Turned Over

This message is for The community center asked me to lead the weekend cooking class for the neighborhood kids because I know how to feed a family, but I have never taught a recipe to anyone and I am terrified I will burn the pot or forget a step and leave twelve children hungry and confused in a kitchen that is not mine.

The air in the community center kitchen hung thick with the sharp, white smell of chopped onions. Mara stood behind the stainless steel counter, her fingers wrapped tightly around a wooden spoon that felt too heavy for her hand. Twelve pairs of eyes were fixed on her, bright and waiting. They were looking for the first step. They were looking for the teacher. She knew the food. She knew exactly how to feed a family, how to stretch a few ingredients into a meal that tasted like safety. But she did not know how to lead this room. She had never taught a recipe to anyone. The silence stretched, taut as a wire. She could feel the heat rising from the stove, not from the burner, but from the fear that she would burn the pot or forget a step and leave twelve children hungry and confused in a kitchen that was not hers. Her hands trembled slightly against the wood. The spoon was a tool, but it was not the source of her skill. She looked down at the cutting board, then back at the children. The weight in her palms was not just the spoon. It was the gap between what she knew and what she was being asked to share. She had prepared the soil of her heart, but she had never turned over a field of people. The turn was coming.

The Supply Comes With the Soil

The list of reasons for refusal is ready before anyone asks for it. It is a long inventory of gaps. No degree, no experience, no track record of success in a room full of strangers. The mind catalogs every deficit with precision. It points to the empty space where confidence should be. It highlights the moment where the voice might crack. This inventory is not a lie, but it is not the whole truth. It is only the map of the terrain, not the map of the traveler. The fear is real, and the limitation is honest. But the inventory stops at the edge of the assignment. It does not see what is already there.

You are not disqualified by your lack of formal training. His word says, I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding and knowledge and in all manner of workmanship. The Holy Spirit does not wait for the certificate to be hung on the wall. The supply is not a reward for competence. It is the foundation of the assignment. What God has written is that the capacity is poured in before the task is done. The understanding is present in the moment the need is named.

The gardener does not need to have tilled the land to be given the plow. The tools are given by the One who made the earth. The soil is not changed by the gardener's skill alone. It is changed by the hands that are strengthened by the One who holds the ground together. The work of feeding is not just about the ingredients. It is about the presence that makes the ingredients become life. The kitchen is not a stage for performance. It is a space for provision.

You were ordained before the fear arrived. Jeremiah 1:5 says, before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and I ordained you. The calling is not a reaction to the fear. The calling is the root that holds the fear in place. The Holy Spirit knows the heart that is trembling. He does not dismiss the tremor. He works through it. The anointing is not a shield against the shaking. It is the strength that moves while the shaking is still there.

The assignment is ordinary. Feeding children is not a grand political act. It is not a platform for visibility. It is the bread and the salt. It is the simple act of care that sustains a neighborhood. Do not look for a greater title in the kitchen. Look for the hand that is holding the spoon. The work is not about being seen. It is about being present. The children do not need a celebrity. They need a hand that is steady enough to stir the pot.

You have the strength for this specific hour. Zechariah 4:6 says, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. The power is not in the muscles of the arm. The power is in the breath that moves the hand. The Holy Spirit is the wind that moves the sail. The sail is the reader's willingness. The wind is God's supply. The two together move the boat across the water. The lack of experience is not a barrier to the wind. It is the space where the wind takes hold.

The soil that has not been turned over is not dead. It is waiting. The turn is not a failure of preparation. It is the start of the work. The reader is not expected to know every step of the recipe. The reader is expected to trust that the next step will be revealed as the previous one is completed. The Holy Spirit is the guide in the kitchen. He does not shout the instructions. He nudges the heart. He clarifies the mind. He steadies the hand.

You are equipped for the work in front of you. 2 Corinthians 1:21 says, He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God. The anointing is not a rank. It is a supply. It is the oil on the head. It is the cup that runs over. The reader does not need to prove they are worthy. The reader only needs to stand in the place of the assignment. The supply is already there. It is waiting to be used.

The fear of burning the pot is a real fear. But the fire is under control. The stove is not a wild beast. It is a tool that has been tamed by design. The reader is not alone in the kitchen. The community is there. The children are there. The God who made the earth is there. The presence of the Holy Spirit is the constant variable. The other variables change. The presence does not. The reader is not fighting the fear alone. The reader is walking through the fear with the One who holds the universe in His hands.

The breakthrough

The kitchen is quiet now. The onions are cut. The pot is on the stove. The children are waiting. The fear is still there, but it is smaller now. It is not a wall. It is a voice that can be heard over. The reader is not here to be perfect. The reader is here to be present. The supply is not in the reader's hands. The supply is in the hand that holds the reader's hands. The turn is happening now. The soil is being turned. The work is beginning. The reader does not need to see the whole meal. The reader only needs to see the next step. And the next step is simple. It is to stir the pot. It is to speak the word. It is to be there. The breakthrough is not a dramatic moment. It is the quiet moment when the fear is no longer the only voice in the room. It is the moment when the reader realizes that the work is not theirs to carry alone. It is the moment when the supply meets the assignment. And the meal is made.

Declare this over yourself

  1. This kitchen, you are the place of provision where the next step is revealed as the previous one is completed. The onions are cut, the pot is on the stove, and the work is beginning now in the name of Jesus.
  2. The fear of being unprepared, I evict you because the written word declares that He who establishes us has anointed us. The Holy Spirit moves the hand and steadies the heart in this specific hour.
  3. Lord, you are the One who holds the universe and supplies the strength for this ordinary assignment. I am walking through the trembling with the wind of the Holy Spirit moving my sail.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
